KOLLUR

On  2010 Januvary 23 &24 A group of teachers inclding my family visited Kollur,Subrahmanyam,Murudeswara,Uduppi, and Kudajaadri. From Shornur we started the journey in the Train.
Kollur is a tiny village in the Kundapur Taluq of Karnataka that is a special destination for pilgrims from all over the country. Its scenic location against the background of the Western Ghats, on the banks of the perennial Sauparnika River, adds to the serene atmosphere of this famous temple town. This is the site of the famous Mookambika Temple, which is said to have been created by Lord Parashurama.
History
The Mookambika Temple is one of the busiest religious centers in the country and it is an important seat of Shakti worship. The Goddess Parvati is said to have killed an Asura called Mookasura here, hence the name Mookambika.

The beautiful metal idol of Devi Mookambika  was installed by Sri Adi Shankara. It is said that the Devi appeared before him and he requested that She follow him to Kerala where he wanted her to reside, so that he could worship her regularly. The Goddess agreed to follow him, but put forth a condition he should not look back to check if She was following him.

When Adi Shankara reached this place, the anklets on the foot of the Devi stopped tinkling, he looked back, and the goddess refused to follow him further as per the condition. He had the metal image of the Devi installed in the Kollur Temple, behind the Jyotirlinga.

The Arishna Gundi Waterfalls located deep within the jungle, is a popular tourist spot here. The sunlight falling on the cascade makes it look a bright yellow/orange. This gives it the name Arishna (Turmeric Yellow).

The Kodachadri Hill Range is yet another destination - the place where Sri Adi Shankara had the first Darshan of the Devi. It is frequented by trekking enthusiasts. A special time to visit this temple town would be during the Navaratri or Dussera, when the nine nights dedicated to the female trinity are celebrated in a grand manner.

Kollur is a part of a wildlife reserve, as the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the lesser known natural reserves. It is aided by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Kollur is a place of picturesque beauty that houses breathtaking vistas of valleys and hills and waterways. The temple and the setting will make your visit to Kollur an unforgettable experience.

My daughter Ambili  in Murudeswara

BANTHIPPUR

In September 2010...Nilambur,Chandrakantham Eco-Community Group conducted a nature camp.First day on September 11, forest walk, flora fauna study, was the programme.Second day early morning we went to Bathippur through Vazhikkadavu,Muthumala,Masinagudi.

The Bandipur Forest Reserve area is one of the better known tiger reserves in India, boasting of a tiger population almost 70. Spread over almost 900 square kilometers, the Project Tiger protected area is situated in the Chamrajanagar district of Karnataka. It lies just 80 kilometers from Mysore and about 220 kilometers from Bangalore, and you can drive down from either of the cities. The reserve in Bandipur stretches across the adjoining states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, in places called Mudumalai and Wayanad respectively. Together, they form the biggest protected forest reserve in Southern India. It is also part of the protected Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, where the world famous Silent Valley is located.
Located on the banks of the Kabini River, the Bandipur forest area is also home to many wild animals like the panther, bison, many species of deer, wild elephants, wild boar, jackal, etc.
The many streams feeding the Kabini and other watering holes dotting the landscape provide adequate feeding grounds to all residents in the forest reserve. You can spot many varieties of rare birds in the forests of Bandipur like robins, jungle fowl, partridges, peacocks and peahens, pigeons and different birds of prey.
Sandalwood (something that the region is very famous for), rosewood, and teak tress provide a natural habitat for different wildlife and the vegetations provides natural cover for these species. There are many reptiles that are native to the tropics like King Cobras, Vipers, Adders, and Rat Snakes, apart from many types of lizards and chameleons that thrive in Bandipur. You can go on a safari in the forest early in the morning during dawn or at dusk, when many animals come out to the watering holes to quench their thirst. Jeeps will be available for safaris or you can take the tour bus run by the forest department's office. Private vehicles are restricted within the protected region. Many forest lodges, resorts and hotels provide accommodation options through which tourists can enjoy nature at its best.
There are plenty of places to visit nearby like the Gopalaswamy Beta temple and the Kabini dam. If your idea of a perfect vacation is to spend some time among the wildlife in the chilly silence of the forest, then Bandipur in Karnataka is the right place for you to be!

NELLIYAMBATHY

Nelliampathi is a popular hill station 60 km away from Palakkad in western ghats in kerala. It is surrounded by tea andcoffee plantations and has excellent weather conditions. The only route is from Nemmara, from where the first town of Nelliampathi, namely Kaikatty junction, is at a distance of 26 km. At the 9th kilometer is the Pothundi Dam, a small irrigation dam which provides water for the rice fields in the surrounding area. The dam is at the foot of the Nelliampathi hills. From here, the road winds up for the next 17 km, with many hairpin turns on the way. Immediately after Pothundy dam, comes the government forest, where one can see massive teak trees. On the way, one can see wild animals like monkey, deer and porcupine. The view of the Pothundy dam from the height is a breathtaking sight. There will be many waterfalls by the roadside during the rainy season.

At an elevation of 1000 metres at the southern tip of the Palakkad gap, the Nelliampathi hills are known for their exquisite fauna. About 215 species of birds and 90 species of butterflies have been recorded in these hills. Some of the rare species of birds include Grey-breasted Laughing Thrush, Great Pied Hornbill, Jerdon's Baza, Great Black Woodpecker, Oriental Broad-billed Roller, Nilgiri Flycatcher, Broad-tailed Grassbird and Nilgiri Pipit. Primates including Lion-tailed Macaque, Bonnet Macaque and Nilgiri Langur are seen here. A small population of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr is also seen in the grassy peaks.I visited Nelliyambathy 3 times (27th Sept 2011,July 2010& in 2006)
